How to Get More Referrals For Your Business

Have you ever gotten a referral from a happy customer? Same here, and they’re incredible, because the person arriving at your doorstep already believes you can help. They move through decisions with far less friction, and they tend to become those clients who stick around, sing your praises, and make the work much more satisfying! The tricky part is that referrals feel random until you put a light structure around them, and once you do, the momentum starts to compound in a way that feels steady rather than sporadic.

The Reason Referrals Work

  1. Pre-built trust, because someone they respect vouched for you 
  2. Faster decisions since they show up “warmed up” 
  3. Stronger loyalty, as people who begin in trust tend to stay in trust

Pair that built-in trust with clear communication (not a generic blast) and you’ll see more replies, more booked calls, and more projects that close.

Define Your Ideal Customer

Referrals multiply when people know exactly who to send your way. You can describe or define your ideal customer by telling the short story behind your solution:

  • who they are,
  • the moment their need appears,
  • the outcomes that matter most to them.

Here’s ours as an example: Our ideal customer is a small- to mid-sized business owner or marketing lead (10–100 employees). The need shows up when traffic is steady but their website isn’t turning visits into calls or form fills, and growth feels stuck. 

The pressure lands on the person responsible for revenue who’s tired of juggling disconnected tools. Success looks like a strategy-first site that converts, clearer messaging, meaningful SEO, and simple automation that drives more qualified inquiries each month.

If a referral doesn’t match your description, it’s okay to thank the sender and pass. Protecting the quality of introductions teaches your network what a “great fit” looks like and makes future referrals easier, faster, and better.

Show Up Where They Already Are

Notice where your ideal folks spend attention, so maybe an early-morning LinkedIn scroll or a Friday habit of skimming local business news. Meet them there consistently.

Make the Ask Simple (and Timed)

When you ask at the right moment and make the process effortless, customers naturally refer. 

After a visible win or kind review, send a short, gracious note that thanks them, includes a simple two-sentence blurb they can forward, and gives one clear next step. Removing small points of friction invites warmer introductions and makes it easier to respond quickly, keep momentum, and guide the new contact to a brief, respectful call.

We appreciate you being with us. If you know a [your ICP—e.g., “multi-location service business”] who wants [your key outcome], we’d be grateful for an introduction.
