The Storefront That Sells Memberships

How Royal Animal Refuge turned a pet boutique into a reason to give every month

Client Overview

Royal Animal Refuge is a Georgia nonprofit that rescues animals from municipal shelters, owner surrenders, and neglect cases, then places them through behavioral matching. In 2024 it opened Royal Canine & Co., a pet boutique in Tyrone whose proceeds fund the rescue work.

Project Scope

JHD built the Royal Canine & Co. storefront on WooCommerce inside the refuge's existing website — a curated catalog across eight shopping categories, flat-rate shipping, local pickup, member pricing, and a shop FAQ the team can maintain without calling a developer.

Challenge and Innovation

A rescue funded by donations is always asking. A boutique on a back road in Tyrone can only sell to whoever drives past it. Royal Animal Refuge had the inventory, the brand, and a building still under renovation, but no digital shelf and no way to reach supporters outside the county. The real question was never how to add a store. It was how to make retail do work the donate button couldn't.

JHD Solution

We kept the shop on the refuge's own domain instead of spinning up a separate storefront, so everyone who arrives to adopt, foster, or donate lands one click from something they can buy. We organized the catalog the way people actually shop for a dog — Treats, Wear, Walk, Sleep, Grooming, Bowls and Feeding — rather than a flat grid of SKUs. Then we wired the store into the membership: monthly donors get up to 40% off every purchase, every month. Local pickup ties online orders back to the physical shop, so the two channels feed each other instead of competing.

Impact and Expansion

The store went live with eight categories and a premium curated catalog before renovations on the physical shop were finished — the digital shelf opened ahead of the doors. Supporters anywhere can now buy from the refuge, and local ones can order online and pick up in person. The bigger shift is structural: recurring giving is no longer a pure ask. A monthly donor gets 40% off treats, leashes, and grooming supplies they were going to buy anyway, which makes the membership easier to join and harder to walk away from.

Conclusion

Most nonprofits are told to diversify revenue and end up with a merch page nobody visits. The difference here is that the store and the mission share one site, and the membership makes both stronger. Royal Animal Refuge had the animals, the brand, and the products. JHD built the place where supporting the work and shopping for your own dog became a single decision.
