8 Ways to Get Visitors to Spend More Time on Your Website

Would you buy something from a salesman if you just met him? Is it comprehendible that you met him for like 5 seconds and the next thing is you are buying from him? No? Absolutely, what we are trying to say. A website acts as a 24/7 salesman for your business. If your targeted audience isn’t hanging around on your website for long, you are probably going to lose a number of quality sales and leads. 

Why? The simple answer is trust. If they don’t know what’s in it for them, they also won’t buy from them. But how do you keep them on your website? How to increase the time visitors spend on your website? How do you make them trust you?

1. Put up a clean design

A visitor spends less than 5 seconds deciding whether he wants to stay on your website or not. To make this decision in favor of your website, put up a clean design. If he feels like your website is a mess and not understandable to him, he would immediately leave. How do you clean up your website’s design? Keep it simple. 

Make sure the menu is well-structured and everything is accessible for your visitor. Website colors should be nice and not trigger the mind of your visitor. Try to use a limited color palette. Don’t display too many things in one place or pile things up as it will make your visitors confused in navigation. 

2. Make the text size readable 

About 47% of visitors will leave your website if they are unable to read the text. Imagine it this way. People won’t struggle to read text on your website when they can get the information from your competitors. While you are competing to stay on top, a small mistake like text size can cause you to quality leads. 

The text size on your website should be at least 16px. Don’t make paragraphs longer than 4 lines as visitors will struggle to skim through the knowledge you are providing. Also, make sure that you are not using more than two font styles. 

3. Add value to your readers’ time 

Solving the problem or query of your visitor is still the most underrated technique to convert them into quality leads. You can use real-life examples and anecdotes to illustrate your points and make the content more relatable for your readers. 

Avoid using jargon or complex language that may be difficult for some readers to understand. Instead, use clear and concise language to communicate your message effectively. Using headings and subheadings can help break up your content and make it easier for your readers to scan and understand.

4. Give them more resourceful links 

By including links to relevant and useful resources, you can help your readers learn more about the topic and encourage them to spend more time on your website. You can link to other blogs or resources on your website but make sure they are relatable to visitors’ queries. 

The resources you link to should add value to the content you are writing. For example, if you are writing about a particular subject, you might link to an academic article or a case study that provides additional information or insights. This will also increase your authority as an information provider. 

5. Engage them with videos and images 

Using high-quality and visually appealing images can help grab the attention of your visitors and keep them engaged. Make sure the photos and videos you use are relevant to the content on your website and are engaging for your visitors.

Photos, Gifs, or videos can be used to illustrate points or provide examples, which can make your content more relatable and engaging for your visitors. This will help your visitors to understand and comprehend things better while increasing the time spent on your website. 

6. Relate to your readers 

Relating to your readers can help you establish a genuine relationship with them which will keep them coming back to you. Sharing personal experiences and examples can help make your content more relatable and connect with your readers on a deeper level.

Using a conversational tone in your writing can help make it feel like you are talking directly to your readers, which can make your content more engaging and relatable. Showing empathy and understanding toward your readers' experiences and feelings can help create a sense of connection and reliability.

7. Optimize your website for mobile 

According to surveys, 59.5% of traffic comes from the mobile browser which means that if your website isn’t optimized for mobile, you are losing a great audience. Google and other search engines prioritize mobile-friendly websites in their search results, which can improve the visibility of your website and drive more traffic to it. 

A responsive design ensures that your website automatically adjusts to fit the screen size of the device it is being viewed on. This is the most effective way to optimize your website for mobile. Make sure any calls to action (such as buttons or forms) are easy to tap on a small screen. 

8. Don’t let viewers abandon your website 

When a visitor is about to leave your website, it's an opportunity to provide them with a resource that could help keep them on your site longer. Offering a free download, special offers, exclusive content, newsletter sign-ups, and other such options can be a great way to show that they are special to you. 

Using a live chat option can also be a great idea to keep your visitors on the website for longer as they will be able to directly ask their queries and ultimately become the quality leads for your business.
