The Pain Ladder Has Changed

A year ago, we wrote about the pain ladder your buyers are on: the idea that people will tolerate a small amount of discomfort for a surprisingly long time.

Your laptop runs slowly? You deal with it. The battery dies a little too quickly? Annoying, but manageable. Then one morning it crashes an hour before an important presentation, and suddenly you’re buying a new laptop before lunch.

That part of buyer behavior hasn’t changed. What has changed is the environment around the buyer. Today, people are dealing with fatigue.

Too much content. Too many ads. Too many emails. Too many businesses explaining the same thing in almost the same way. Search itself has changed too, with recommendation engines and social algorithms increasingly doing some of the sorting before a customer ever reaches you.

So the pain ladder looks a little different now. Now, it’s:

Fatigue → Indifference → Trust → Recognition → Action

Your buyers aren’t moving from a small problem to a larger problem in a simple, linear way anymore.

They’re moving through an increasingly crowded information environment.

1. Fatigue

Your customer is already overwhelmed by content, ads, emails, recommendations, search results, and AI-generated answers.

This is the new form of ambient pain.

They may have a problem, but they’re tired of processing messages about it.

2. Indifference

Fatigue turns into indifference when your message blends in with everything else.

They don’t necessarily reject your content. They simply don’t notice it, remember it, or consider it relevant enough to act on.

3. Trust

When every business uses the same claims, phrases, formats, and promises, customers become skeptical.

“Quality service.”

“Industry expertise.”

“Personalized solutions.”

“Trusted partner.”

Those statements may be true, but they no longer provide enough evidence to help someone choose. Customers need proof, specificity, original perspective, and a reason to believe you are different.

4. Recognition

Recognition is the new turning point. Your customer begins to notice that your message, voice, examples, visuals, and point of view consistently belong to the same business. They think:

“I’ve seen these people before.”

“I understand what they do.”

“I remember what they stand for.”

Recognition reduces the amount of work required to evaluate you. Instead of starting from zero every time, the customer carries an impression of your brand forward.

5. Action

Once customers recognize and trust you, taking action becomes easier. They may click, subscribe, contact you, request a proposal, visit your store, or make a purchase.

You’ve created enough clarity, relevance, trust, and recognition that the next step feels natural.

So the pain ladder now looks like this:

Fatigue: “I’m overwhelmed by all of this.”

Indifference: “This looks like everything else.”

Trust: “Why should I believe you?”

Recognition: “I know this brand and what it stands for.”

Action: “I’m ready to take the next step.”

The biggest change in this ladder is that businesses can no longer assume attention is the first step in the buying journey. Because your customer may already be tired.

Your job is to create relief: make the problem clear, make your perspective recognizable, and give people a reason to remember you.

Can your customer still tell the difference between you and everybody else offering to solve their problem?

Fatigue Is Becoming the New Ambient Pain

In the original pain ladder, we talked about ambient pain: the low-level annoyance people tolerate because it hasn’t become bad enough to fix yet.

Today, one of the biggest forms of ambient pain is information fatigue.

Open your inbox.

Scroll.

Check Instagram.

Search something on Google.

Ask an AI tool a question.

Within just a few minutes, you can encounter dozens of headlines, recommendations, advertisements, videos, summaries, opinions, and offers.

Individually, none of those things is necessarily bad.

Collectively? It can become exhausting.

And the more content people consume, the faster they become at dismissing what doesn’t immediately feel relevant.

That creates a new challenge, because your marketing efforts are competing against everything your customer has already seen today.

Oversaturation Makes Information Easier to Ignore

There has never been more information available to a customer. There has also never been an easier way for businesses to create more of it.

But when everybody can create more content, more content stops being the advantage.

And when businesses use the same tools, prompts, trends, structures, and talking points without adding enough of themselves, it all starts to flatten out.

Eventually, even helpful information becomes background noise. That’s fatigue.

The Next Step on the Ladder Is Indifference

Fatigue becomes a bigger business problem when it turns into indifference. A customer doesn’t necessarily dislike your content. They simply don’t register it.

And we tend to think unsuccessful marketing means someone looked at our message and rejected it.

But really, they never gave it enough attention to reject.

They scrolled. Skipped. Closed the tab. Read the AI-generated summary. Moved to the next recommendation. Forgot which business said what.

This is why simply publishing more can become the wrong response to declining attention. If ten pieces of content weren’t memorable, twenty similar pieces probably won’t fix the problem.

You have to give people a reason to recognize you.

AI Search Raises the Stakes for Brand Recognition

This gets especially interesting when you look at what is happening in search.

Google has increasingly incorporated AI-generated experiences directly into Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google also says AI Overviews now reach more than 2.5 billion monthly users, while AI Mode has surpassed one billion monthly users.

That changes the discovery process. People can get an explanation, comparison, list, or recommendation immediately.

This means the job of a website, and the brand behind it, is changing.

And when an AI tool, search result, social post, review, advertisement, and website all introduce your business at different moments, those pieces should add up to the same brand. The customer should think:

“Oh, I’ve seen these people before.”

Repetition Is Good. Sameness Is Not.

This is where businesses can get tripped up.

Marketing requires repetition. Branding requires repetition. You absolutely want people to repeatedly encounter your message.

The problem is not repetition. The problem has been repeating information without building recognition.

There’s a big difference between:

“Here is another generic marketing tip.”

and

“Here is how this brand thinks about marketing.”

Your audience should begin recognizing your perspective.

Your examples. Your language. Your priorities. Your way of explaining the problem.

Identity Pain Has Become More Important

Our original pain ladder also included identity pain: the disconnect customers feel when a company doesn’t seem aligned with who they are, what they value, or what they expect.

That pain becomes even more important in an oversaturated market. If every company says it offers great service, expertise, innovation, quality, and personalized attention, those words stop helping customers choose.

They need other signals.

What do you believe?

How do you approach the work?

What does your team notice that other people overlook?

What kinds of customers are you especially good at helping?

What are you willing to say that sounds unmistakably like your business?

Your brand gives people shortcuts.

Shortcuts are awesome when people are tired.

Recognition reduces the amount of work a customer has to do.

The Pain Still Needs to Be Specific, Felt, and Solvable

One part of the original framework absolutely still holds up.

Good marketing makes pain specific, felt, and solvable.

Specific pain gives the problem a name.

“Your marketing isn’t working” is vague.

“You’re publishing every week, but none of it sounds different from the five competitors publishing about the same topics” gives someone something to recognize.

Specificity reduces ambiguity. It helps the customer say:

“Yes. That is exactly what’s happening.”

Felt pain shows what the problem costs.
Solvable pain gives people back control.

Here’s where fatigue becomes solvable. You can:

  • Narrow the audience you’re speaking to.
  • Develop a recognizable point of view.
  • Use consistent language around the problems you solve.
  • Create recurring visual and editorial elements.
  • Build content from actual customer questions instead of generic topic lists.
  • Use AI to support your voice instead of replacing it.
  • Give people original experience, examples, stories, opinions, and proof they cannot get from a generic summary.
Your Content Needs a Memory

Content can no longer succeed simply because it answers a question.

It also needs to create memory.

Your audience should walk away remembering an idea, a story, an opinion, an example, or a feeling that belongs to your business.

That’s where content strategy and brand strategy have to meet.

If your business is creating content but struggling to turn that visibility into recognition, it may be time to look at the strategy underneath it. Fill out the form below and let’s talk about how to connect your brand, content, and visibility into a marketing system people can recognize.
